Gumpaste is your Best Friend

I want to talk about gum paste this week because gum paste is and will be your best friend if you decide to cake decorate! I love gum paste the texture is like play doh and so easy to work with and it taste DELICIOUS. It hardens after a while and you can make the best figures out of gum paste. All you need to make it is egg whites and tylose powder (which you can get online). The recipe is on the tylose powder container and is pretty basic and easy to follow. I create soon many things out of gum paste. On my Elmo cake the entire face is made of gum paste I just cut out pieces of the Elmo's out of gum paste. As you are working on it remember that water is your worst enemy and shortening your best friend! As you work with gum paste it may start to dry if this happens add a bit of shortening to make it nice and soft but never EVER add water. Beware of water it will destroy your gum paste and make it into a mushy mess. I use it to glue gum paste together like with Elmo's eyes for example I brushed on a bit of water behind them and stuck them on his face. Once you are done using it you can freeze it and use it in the future. You just have to leave it out to thaw for a couple of ours before using it and you're good to go. I use gel dyes to add color to my gum paste and just massage it in and yes, your hands will be a hot mess after this. Resist eating it as you work ;) and once you start you will never want to stop working with it. It's simply AMAZING!!!
